Peter Stein has been the Director of Photography on over 50 feature films, TV movies, and documentaries. He has photographed major studio and independent releases, and classic cult films in various genres. Some of his most well-known movies are Pet Sematary, Friday the 13th part II and the football comedy Necessary Roughness for Paramount; Mr. Nanny for New Line Cinema and two Ernest movies for Disney, Ernest Saves Christmas and Ernest Goes to Jail. He was inducted into the prestigious American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) in 1999.

Peter was a Professor in the NYU Graduate Film Program, where he was the Head of Production.  He was nominated for two Emmy Awards, and taught cinematography at SUNY Purchase and The School of Visual Arts, and has given workshops at many of the area’s universities. Currently he manages the archive of his father, noted still photographer Fred Stein, and produced and co- directed the documentary film about him ”Out of Exile – The Photography of Fred Stein which has been airing on PBS. He lives in Dutchess County, NY with his wife Dawn Freer the co-director and editor of the film.
