Daniel Jocz: Ripped, Shredded, and Sprayed
October 10 @ 12:00 pm - November 17 @ 5:00 pm
“Mad Rose Gallery to Showcase Groundbreaking Works from Acclaimed American Artist Daniel Jocz”
Beginning on October 10th and running through November 24th, The Mad Rose Gallery in Millerton, New York, will present Daniel Jocz: Ripped, Shredded, and Sprayed a significant solo exhibition highlighting the extraordinary and innovative work of celebrated American artist Daniel Jocz. Renowned for his unconventional approach and boundary-defying creativity, Jocz has been a transformative figure in the art world for more than five decades. The gallery will bring together a diverse collection of his work, including bold sculptures, dynamic wall pieces, and vibrant jewelry. For the first time, pieces from across Jocz’s prolific career will be available for purchase in a single location, marking a unique and unprecedented opportunity for collectors and art enthusiasts alike.
Jocz’s work explores masterful sculptural forms imbued with autobiographical elements and clever, subtle visual humor—trademarks that have earned him a reputation as both a “trickster” and an “outsider” in the art community. On Saturday November 16th, Jocz will share stories behind his work in a special artist conversation, offering attendees an exclusive chance to engage with the artist on a personal level. His art is part of prestigious museum collections worldwide, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Jocz was also the subject of a dedicated retrospective at the Fuller Craft Museum in Massachusetts (2022–23) and the focus of the 2022 monograph The Art & Times of Daniel Jocz, published by Arnoldsche. “The career of Massachusetts artist Daniel Jocz has been marked by shape-shifting and playful irreverence, resulting in an energetically diverse body of work,” said the Fuller Craft Museum.
The Mad Rose Gallery exhibition will feature a captivating selection of abstract 4 x 4-foot wall panels, which immediately command attention with their strong graphic presence and unique ripped-and-torn construction. These works, often rendered in a stark black and white palette with occasional splashes of color, emphasize sculptural form as a primary element. Freestanding sculptures will also be on display, including a teddy bear constructed from torn aluminum panels and a gilded modern amphora. Additionally, a range of Jocz’s remarkable jewelry will be showcased, including his flamboyant flocked Candy Wear pieces and oversized aluminum bracelets and collars that push the boundaries of traditional jewelry design.
Jocz has worked from various locations throughout his career, including a studio in Cambridge, MA, during the 1980s and 1990s. Since the 2000s, he has been based in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, where he designed a stunning modern home in the mountains. Visitors to his property are greeted by a winding journey through this architectural masterpiece, eventually leading to the artist’s secluded tower studio at the peak.
This exceptional exhibition at Mad Rose Gallery is a rare chance to explore and acquire works by an influential artist whose career has been marked by bold experimentation, irreverence, and a continually evolving artistic vision.
