Understanding and Painting Abstractly

This class will study and review the history of abstract art and artists such as Hilma af Klint, Wassily Kandinsky, Cezanne’s contribution to Cubism, the abstract expressionism of Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock. Text book reading assignments will be requested to reinforce videos and in class exercises. Class time will be spent developing and strengthening style and personal technique. Student work will be reviewed during in-class critiques. Final projects will be displayed in a TBD group exhibition. This class strongly encourages students to experiment explore and develop their own artistic vocabulary.

Students must provide drawing pencils, watercolors and a sketch pad. Class will provide standing easels, acrylic paints, canvas boards, and water color paper for class projects.
